Below are some common questions we’re often asked. If your query isn’t listed here, feel free to contact us. We’re happy to help!
How often should I service my car?
We recommend servicing your vehicle every 6 to 12 months or at least every 10,000 km, whichever comes first. Regular servicing ensures your car stays in top condition and helps prevent costly repairs.
What should I check before going on a long trip?
Before heading off, it’s essential to check the following:
- Engine oil
- Engine coolant
- Tyre pressure
How do I check my engine oil level?
Ensure your car is on level ground and the engine is cool (or warm but be cautious; the parts may be hot).
- Open your car’s bonnet by finding the release, typically situated near the floor on the driver’s or passenger’s side.
- Look for the dipstick, a long, thin rod that may be easily identifiable by its bright colour or a loop at the end.
- Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again.
- When you check, the oil level should be within the ‘low’ and ‘full’ lines.
If the level is low, it usually takes about 1 litre of oil to reach full. If you’re unsure, don’t risk running the engine; give us a call.
How do I check my engine coolant level?
Check the coolant when the engine is cool or has been off for at least 15 minutes.
- If your vehicle has a radiator cap, remove it and ensure the coolant is full to the top. Also, check the overflow bottle; the level should sit between the low and full marks.
- The coolant should be visible in the plastic tank if your car has a sealed radiator with a reservoir. Again, the level should be between the low and high marks.
How do I check tyre pressures?
You’ll need a tyre pressure gauge or visit your nearest petrol station with an air pump to check your tyre pressure.
- For recommended pressures, refer to the sticker on your vehicle (often inside the driver’s door) or your owner’s manual.
- If you’re unsure, here are general guidelines:
Small to medium cars: Front 30–35 psi / Rear 28–30 psi
Large cars: Front 34–38 psi / Rear 32–36 psi
If you’re not confident checking yourself, drop into CARS. We’ll happily check your fluids and tyre pressures free of charge.
